Oh hey guys! I didn't see you there.
That's how almost every children's show used to start...."oh my! you caught me by surprise!" even though Mr. Roger's always had his sweater on perfectly just as the music ended (used to stress me out btw, I was always sure he wouldn't quite make it).
It's also, coincidentally, the way that many of my on-campus conversations go. This is due in large part because I can't see very well and lose glasses like it's a competition but sometimes...just SOMETIMES...you just don't want to talk to someone and you get caught. Don't act like you've never done it either because everyone has been too hungover, or too busy, or too late-for-something and you glance up and there...20-30 yards away, is a conversation that you don't want to have and it's approaching...quickly. You could do the duck and cover but then there's the risk that they sniped you as you were sniping them and they'd know what was up. You could also do the "I'm on my phone head nod acknowledgement" but sometimes you can't think up a fake conversation quickly enough so alternatively....I just go for the "I'm mentally preoccupied and can't even bother looking up". Unfortunately this not only doesn't work all the time if someone is GOING to talk to you no matter what, but also makes you look crazy and kind of like a bitch. Which is bad for business.
Sigh....I guess all that's left to do is man up, go to some InternBar events, and forget how many ex-TA's are lurking around every corner.
See you guys soon!
